It is hard to not leave an interview wondering how well you performed and whether you made a good enough impression to warrant a follow-up interview or earn yourself a job offer.
If you recently had a job interview, or if you have an interview coming up that you are preparing for, here are five signs to be aware of that indicate if your job interview went well.
1. Your interviewer spent additional time with you.
Recruiters and hiring managers do not have lots of time. In fact, they have very little time. As such, they cannot waste what little time they have interviewing the wrong candidate or someone they have already decided is not a good fit.
If your interviewer speaks with you beyond the allotted time, typically 20-25 minutes, it speaks volumes as to your potential as a candidate.
2. Your interviewer introduced you to other team members.
If a hiring manager takes the time to introduce you to other members of the team and shares details about their role and position, take that as a positive sign. After all, there would be little value introducing you to team members if the recruiter had already made up his or her mind that you were not a good fit. That would be like introducing a bad first date to your parents.
Keep in mind that introductions made after the interview are the ones that matter most, because at this point the interviewer has a feel for who you are. You can further increase your chances of securing the job by making a great impression with the team members you are introduced to.
3. Your interviewer tried to “sell” you on the company.
Once an interviewer identifies you as a strong candidate, the tone of the interview will shift. Meaning, the substance of the interview will be less about determining whether you are qualified for the position, and more about why you should work for this company.
An interviewer may try and “sell” you on the company by discussing benefits, company culture, and other job perks. If you notice this shift in tone, this is a great sign that your job interview went well.
4. Your interviewer asked for your availability to start.
This one is simple. There is no need to know a candidate’s availability to start if that candidate has already been ruled out. If your interviewer wants to know when you can start working, that is a very strong sign that the interview went well and the recruiter sees you as a top candidate.
5. Your interviewer and you shared a good connection.
Finally, one of the most tried and true signs of ascertaining whether an interview went well is how you would gauge your connection with the interviewer. Borrowing again from the first date analogy, you know a date went well if the conversation flowed easily and there was quality dialogue. Conversely, a date with long, awkward pauses is a pretty tell-tale sign there will not be a second round.
The same goes for job interviews. If you easily connected with the interviewer, chances are the interview went well. If you felt the questions were very surface level and robotic, that is a pretty good indicator that the interview did not go so well.
A strong connection can manifest in several ways. One way is that you and the interviewer had a lot in common and could match each other’s personalities. Another way to establish a connection is via substantive discussions about yourself and the role.
